Am I better at surface design instead of surface “pattern” design?

While going through Immersion 2023 this year something dawned on me. I may be better suited for surface design as opposed to surface pattern design.

This same thing happened last year during Immersion 2022 where instead of creating repeat patterns I found myself fighting against the desire to create “scenes.” It happened again today. I eventually got to a repeat pattern but it definitely didn’t start out that way nor was it my inclination to do so. Does anyone else have this problem? And maybe it’s not actually a problem, just part of my signature style. I think the design below looks much better as a motif / spot illustration (image #2)  as opposed to trying to force it into a repeat pattern  (image #1).
